Steel Buildings in a Humid Valley
Metal building and shop insulation around Decatur solves two problems at once: heat and condensation. A bare steel roof in a north Alabama summer soaks up sun and radiates it into the building, so a shop that is comfortable at 8 a.m. can be unbearable by noon. In cooler months the opposite happens. Warm, humid air inside the building touches cold steel, condenses and drips on tools, vehicles, hay or whatever is stored below. Spray foam bonded to the steel deals with both.
Why closed-cell is the usual choice
Closed-cell foam sticks directly to metal panels, purlins and girts, cures rigid, and at normal thickness works as its own vapor retarder. HomeGuide rates it at R-5 to R-7 per inch. Because it bonds to the steel with no gaps, warm air cannot reach the cold metal, so the condensation stops. It also adds some stiffness to thin panels and cuts the rain noise on a metal roof. Open-cell foam is cheaper per inch but lets vapor through, so on bare steel in a humid climate it generally needs a separate vapor plan and is used less.
Matching the job to how the building is used
Not every building needs the same treatment. A hay barn or equipment shed may only need enough foam on the roof to stop the drip. A woodshop or mechanic's bay that will run a mini-split or a heater benefits from more foam on the roof and walls, plus sealed doors and penetrations. A building being turned into living space or a barndominium has to meet the residential energy code, which in Alabama is based on the 2015 IECC, and that means real targets for walls and ceilings. Tell us how you plan to use the space and we size the thickness to match.
Doors, eaves and openings
Foam on the panels does little if air pours in under the eaves, around overhead doors or through gaps where the roof meets the walls. Those details matter as much as the foam itself. We seal eave gaps and ridge closures where we can, and we point out doors that need weatherstripping or replacement seals so the building can actually hold a temperature.
Prep and timing
Steel needs to be clean and dry before foam goes on. Oil, dust and surface rust get cleaned off, and anything stored inside gets moved or covered. The foam and the surface need to be within a working temperature range, which in Decatur is rarely a problem outside of an occasional cold snap. HomeGuide advises staying out of sprayed areas for 24 hours or more while the foam cures.
A note on fire protection
Foam plastic insulation inside occupied buildings generally has to be covered by a thermal or ignition barrier unless the product is tested for exposure. The rule depends on the building and how it is used, so check with the local building office for anything beyond a basic farm building, and ask any installer which product and coating they plan to use.

Metal Building & Shop Insulation Questions
How thick should spray foam be in a metal building?
To stop condensation, a modest layer of closed-cell bonded to the steel is often enough. For a building you plan to heat and cool, more thickness on the roof pays off. We write the thickness and R-value on the quote.
Can you foam a building with stuff already in it?
Yes, but anything below the work area needs to be moved or covered. Overspray travels, so we plan that with you before the day.
Will foam stop my metal roof from sweating?
Closed-cell foam bonded to the underside of the steel keeps warm, humid air off the cold metal, which is what causes the sweating.
Does a farm building need a permit for insulation?
Rules vary by county and by how the building is used. Check with your local building office, especially if anyone will live or work in it regularly.
