From Mill Villages to New Subdivisions

Spray Foam Insulation in Huntsville covers a city that has changed size several times. Huntsville was the first incorporated town in what is now Alabama, in 1811, and grew on cotton and textile mills, which built worker villages around the edges of town. By 1940 it still had only about 13,000 people. Then the Army built Redstone Arsenal, the space program followed, and Huntsville became the state's largest city, with 215,006 residents in 2020 and 100,391 housing units.

Mill village houses

The old mill villages, built by companies like Lincoln, Dallas and Merrimack, hold small frame houses on piers that were never insulated to modern standards. Their crawl spaces are often open and low, and their attics shallow. Sealing the attic and adding loose fill, plus dealing with the crawl space, usually helps these houses most.

Mid-century ranches

The space-age boom of the 1950s and 1960s filled whole neighborhoods with brick ranches. Those homes typically have thin attic insulation, ductwork in the attic or crawl space, and decades of disturbance from service work. Air sealing and attic depth come first.

Newer suburbs

On the city's growing edges, newer homes have more insulation but often struggle with hot bonus rooms and attic ductwork. Foam around bonus rooms, or a sealed attic, is worth pricing.

Snow does happen

Heavy snow is rare in Huntsville, but storms like the New Year's Eve 1963 snowfall of 17 inches show winter can still test a house. Air sealing helps in both seasons.

What to ask before you hire

Huntsville has many insulation companies to choose from. Ask each one what they will seal before they insulate, which foam or loose fill they plan for each area, the thickness and R-value they are quoting, and how they handle a damp crawl space. Ask for the price broken down by area so bids can be compared. Our written quotes include each of those details.

Can you insulate a mill village house without major work?

Usually. Attic sealing and loose fill, plus crawl space work, can be done without opening walls. Dense-pack can go into closed walls if wiring allows.

What R-value should a Huntsville attic have?

Alabama's amended code lists R-30 for ceilings in Climate Zone 3. ENERGY STAR suggests R-49 for an uninsulated Zone 3 attic.
